A fixed dental bridge is used to replace one or multiple missing teeth. The dental bridge usually consist of one or multiple artificial teeth fixed between two teeth or crowns, in order to fill in the toothless area. The bridge is held in place with artificial teeth or natural teeth adjacent to the missing one(s).
Here are some advantages to the dental bridge:
- Fill in a toothless area
- Avoid premature tooth wear
- Improve chewing as well as talking
- Avoid the migration of natural teeth
The butterfly bridge is mostly used when there is only one missing tooth. The adjacent teeth (abutment teeth) are shaped in order to be anchored by an adhesive technique called wings. Less invasive, this technique, remains the less durable solution in long term. Moreover, this technique should not be used when there is a very strong masticatory force applied to the teeth.
