There are 3 different types of partial dentures: implant supported partial denture, metallic partial denture and acrylic partial denture. Their goals are identical, which is restoring masticatory function, adequate phonetics as well as aesthetics.
Removable implant supported partial denture
The denture is fixed on one, two or many implants, depending on the number of missing teeth and their positions. This type of denture offers a much better stability than a metallic prosthesis, without the inconvenient appearance of hooks.
Partial metallic denture
This type of removable partial denture is by far superior to the one in acrylic. The framework being metal, is very durable. Held into the mouth with the help of hooks and support of a few natural teeth, this type of denture is very stable. Equipped with support, it does not crush the oral tissues and doesn’t damage the remaining natural teeth. Rarely, some patients get a metallic taste in their mouth. An alternative to this problem is to opt for a titanium structure.
For the upper partial denture, there is now the possibility of obtaining a durable structure without the inconvenient of a covered palate. A plate-free palate permits a better sensation in the mouth such as food tasting.
Partial acrylic denture
This type of partial denture is usually temporary. After a long period of time, it can cause significant damage to the oral tissues and remaining natural teeth. The main disadvantage is the loosening or loss of remaining teeth because it lowers the tissues around the teeth and increases the risk of dental cavities by exposing a part of the natural tooth’s root.
