A mouth guard is a device that is placed inside of the mouth to protect the teeth and neighbouring structures such as the bones, the jaw and soft tissues. It is used in contact sports as well as activities where there is a risk of falling.
Types of mouth guards
There are a variety of types of mouth guards. The pre-fabricated model are the least expensive but are also the least comfortable ones and offer a reduced capacity of effectiveness. For a maximal protection, it is rather recommended to use mouth guards that are adapted to your dentition (teeth) as well as your activity. The cost is higher but the investment is well worth it. Since the impression of the teeth is taken and replicated in the mouth guard, the risk of jaw dislocation is reduced, even with a lateral hit.
